---------------------------------------------------------------------- --------- Chapter 3: A Friendly Wager: Daggers and Dancing ----------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- After arranging lodgings at the Commons, the party think about moving onto the Tavern .... (Tatiana:) "Gods! why don't we see a clothes maker before we hit the Tavern so I can find some more comfortable clothes. Looking around at some of the scantily clad women around the town, she raised an eyebrow. "I guess I'll be showing a bit more skin in public, than I'm accustomed to. Before going off to find some more suitable clothing, Tatiana chats amiably to Shade ..... (Tatiana:) Let's set up our sleeping quarters and head to the Tavern. Should be quite a party stirring up there tonight, what with a new boat load of people. Shade and I can sing a duet perhaps. Say where is he?" (Shade:) "Here I am milady, and I'd be delighted to duet with such a lovely partner" - then he casts around a half mock doubtful look - "Am I saying something more than I meant to?" - he shrugs and grins a little (Tatiana:) She smiled inviting more flirtatious behavior "It's better than playing alone" she said along the same lines as Shade had implied. (Shade:) The drow doubles in a deep bow taking off an imaginary plumed hat "Any time you like, milady - he smiles, his green eyes wide in an appreciatingly, but still mocking, glance at Tatiana's figure - just ask and I'll be glad to tune my skills to match your melody." (Tatiana:) Tatiana curtsied as if she had a dress on instead of doe skin pants. "Well then, I can't wait to make music together later tonight" She said with and exaggerated batting of her eyelashes as if shy. (Shade:) OOC: Shade wanted to be as ambiguous as possible (yaz yaz;) But Mauro is an Italian guy: maybe my intentions have not been matched by my words. Forgive me and try to follow my line of thought even if it is not so clearly stated. (Tatiana:) OOC: I think you're doing great! It's definitely got two meanings :) (Shade:) "Anyway, Tatiana, I'll be honoured to sing and play with you. Besides, what did you mean earlier when you mentioned sword dancing? A simulated duel? I'd like it. And throwing daggers.. Hmmm, I'm much more apt at juggling them than at throwing them, but I'll try anyway if you let me." (Tatiana:) "Indeed, by sword dancing I do mean a simulated duel to practice. But the grace and beauty of the swordplay is just as important as the technique. It's good practice too." (Shade:) Shades claps his hands happily "It's lovely Tatiana, say, may I call you 'Ana?" (Tatiana:) "Sure, Silver does. I do consider you a friend too, so you may have that privilege as well." (Shade:) "I'd love to sword and non-sword dance with you: I may teach you a couple of drow dances so tricky that are good practice even without weapons." - he smiles again flapping his long eyebrows in an exaggeratedly flirtatious behaviour - "But dancing is just fine in itself with such a pretty lady." (Tatiana:) Tatiana hesitated as Shade talked about non-sword dancing. She didn't detect lilt in his voice indicating it was the same banter they had previously had. The observant could tell worry crossed her face at the thought of real dancing. (Shade:) Shade is a good observer. A puzzled expression flies through his face for a moment, then, respectfully decides not to force the issue and to ask Tatiana a little more about her feelings on dancing in a more quiet environment. While Tatiana and Shade talk of dancing, the others discuss their plans .... (Silver:) "Well, friends, we have an auspicious start to our adventure. What say we visit the Midnight Run or Wizards Plaza for some refreshment before rejoining our companions later in the Commons." (Tatiana:) She kept her coin purse, longsword, daggers, and musical instruments but left everything else at the Commons, to continue on to the Tavern with Silver and Keilan. (Kaeyar:) After making arrangements at the Commons, Kaeyar would announce "I'm going to the Citadel to check out jobs." He then mumbles "come along if you care to." Kaeyar seems all in favor of meeting at the tavern later. (Arlon:) Arlon says suddenly "Let's off to the Citadel, who is with me!" (Shade:) "I do think we all desire to check out for opportunities, Arlon, I heard Kaeyar talking about going there himself" - he gestures slightly toward the other elf - "It might be a good idea to split in two groups: while one goes to the citadel the second can go to the tavern trying to collect gossip. We can meet in an hour in the market to search for new equipment for this hot climate." Then in a nonchalant tone "I myself would like to check the citadel but any suggestion is accepted." (Arlon:) "Splitting into 2 groups sounds like a fine plan, and (using his unique humor tone - slightly higher pitch and louder) if Kaeyar would not mind traveling with such creatures as us elves - I would be delighted." "What say the rest of you" (Shade:) Shade will wait for the party to decide who is going where. (Arlon:) OOC: If I have time before the group goes to the Tavern, I would find out if there is a library or some place of knowledge that I could visit. Oh, 1 more thing, I need to get a thinner robe of the same style I have, so I will also look for someplace appropriate during my first run through this place. (Arlon:) OOC: okay since it seems that there is some interest in the Citadel, Arlon will 'lead' the way, followed by Shade and Kaeyar. "Let's be off then to the Citadel" (Shade:) OOC: Shade would like to scan a little about the presence here of drow, bards, and shops here. If possible he will have a talk to the drow owning the shop. First he will try to find out if he knows the other drow family or where he comes from, then he will ask him about this place: surroundings, opportunities, etc. OOC: If there is a bard guild (but I do not think so ) he will go there to see if there is anything to be learned about local history and lore. (Arlon:) "Well Shade, how does this clime compare to your home, I hear it can get hotter than this in the underworld if you happen to be near a reservoir of the flowing fire rock" (Shade:) "The underworld can be a place of incomparable beauty: I have been more than once levitating high above such flowing fire just to compose the music for the show the shadows cast by the waves of heat coming from melted rock." - a dreaming expression on his face -"You can almost forget the deadliness of lava lost in the beauty of the shadow and music performance." Then he chuckles "And it can be much more comfortable than this damp climate if you wear the right magical ring." (DM:) (P.S. The Citadel was not open yet, as all guards and the lord and his retinue were at the dock and helping unloading and talking to clerical representatives of the orders of Lathander, Selune and Tymora about setting up temples here, so those who went to check that out just had a pleasant stroll through the village. You noticed some things though. There is a shop half underground called 'The Vault' reputedly belonging to a drow, there is a construction company of three dwarven brothers 'Goldenaxe Construction' and you passed a large house where the Iron Throne representative buys and sells goods for transport between the continents. You notice that the only local metal is copper, and those who have been here longer wear bronze armor, others have iron repaired with bronze. Arrow heads and other weapons are also bronze. There seem to be enough shops to furnish all your needs, though prices for home items are HIGH. Recurring items in payments seem to be golden necklaces and bracelets of distinctly alien design, or pearls in colors you ain't never seen before. Steel pieces also seem common. You get the feeling this place will take quite some getting used to :). (Arlon:) After finding the Citadel shut, he will suggest going to the Wizard's Plaza (where else): "Well lets see what the brew is like here, I will probably have to make my own to be satisfied; but there is always a chance - Maybe the Wizard's Plaza will be the first." The rest of the party are making their way to the Tavern as well ..... (Dithion:) On the way to the Tavern, he wanders off into the 'crowd'. You only notice he is gone after you get to the tavern. (DM:) In the temple area, the place is only staked out so far, and square foot 'bricks' lay stacked, ready to be used. On a few bricks artists are chiseling scenes of the arrival here of the first colonists, with the benevolently smiling Tymora watching over the settlers. A dwarf and some gnomes and humans are standing around measuring and arguing how best to begin this task, some of the humans wearing clerical robes and looking exasperated at the easy going and to their 'civilized' minds disrespectful attitude of the dwarf and his gnome masons. You see the shocked expression on one of the cleric's faces when the dwarf sez: "No ya boneheaded priest, ya got yer shit all wrong. You might'n be a good priest 'n all, but trust me 'n my buddies. When it comes to buildin crap, we is da best. Us knows what we'r doin." (DM:) When Dithion mentions to the dwarves (two of the brothers are in the middle of cutting a huge slab of stone into 'bricks') he is interested in having a building built 'at least the size of the commons', the dwarves begin rolling on the floor laughing. When one of them finally catches his breath (the other keeps laughing uproarishly) he sez: "Joking me you must be. NO one has the money or assets to have such work done now, and anyways, the time would take long. Orders for the next three moons we have already. Enough masons here there be not for such a project between the temples and houses to be built already. Your dreams take somewhere else, or speak to a wizard must you." After you left, the laughing of the two dwarves follows you for quite some distance, and those who overheard your conversation point and snigger at you. (Dithion:) Dithion frowns at the laughing dwarves, but says nothing. Instead he turns and leaves, chuckling himself. He goes to the tavern. (DM:) On the way to the Tavern, those who visit the wide see stalls everywhere. They are offered wares of all kinds. Local stuff you do not recognise, bracelets and necklaces of alien design sold as battle trophies by adventurers, pieces of Death Deer roasted over a fire offered as the tastiest you ever had. Also stuff from home. You see locals exchange much in gold and wares for true steel armor and weapons from Waterdeep. Also some people have staked out pieces here to build their own new houses. It seems, and when you inquire this is confirmed, that those unable to pay for the rent at the Commons can just camp out at the wide during the nite. One grizzled trapper warns you: "Sure, 'n 'tis free 'n all, but ya wouldna believe how COLD dis place gits wen da sun shows its face no more." (Tatiana:) "Cold or not sounds like I'll be camping in the wide before too long!" (Tatiana:) "I'll meet you at the Tavern in a little while. I'm going to try and find a clothing shop. I want to purchase some more appropriate clothing for this heat." (DM:) At the Tavern, most of the party have already met .... The sun is still warm, even though it is already eight o'clock at night. The chairs and tables are filled to capacity, though those of you who headed here early kept some seats open for the rest of you. (Those who have visited Europe, imagine the beach-side terraces of bars on the Mediterranean during high-summer for atmosphere and crowdedness) (DM:) About how broke you guys are. You should each have around 5 gold or less left. Considering drinks are only a few coppers (one or two, maybe up to a silver for the fancy stuff), I will not bother with that, however, for paying up at the commons..... And those who bought clothes should also subtract from their funds (Dithion:) After a short while he reappears, and sits down. Then says, "Any news found here?" (DM:) Everyone is very friendly, and even though you have to climb/step over many people to get to your seats, they are not upset, though will grumble if you caused them to spill their drinks. The place is buzzing with conversations, ranging from newcomers discussing their new environment to oldtimers telling stories of the day and making fun of the foolish newcomers. (Tatiana:) Tatiana was the last to enter the Tavern of the group. She had changed her clothing in the mean time. She had on extremely short legless pants that showed off her derriere nicely. Her muscularly toned legs moved gracefully and a hush followed her as she walked into the room. It wasn't that Tatiana was unmatched in her beauty for there definitely were more beautiful women around. It was the way she moved and the way she treated people that gave her that extra edge. She had on some strange new top that the other local women were wearing. It clothed the breasts but only barely and was held in place with two thin pieces of fabric one around the neck and one around the back. Her long black hair was tied in a pony tail that hung down her back and stopped at the small of her back. She now had on sandals too. Around her waist was her belt that still had on her longsword sheath and the brace of daggers was still attached. Her lute was slung over her shoulder. (Shade:) Shade chokes himself with the water he is drinking at such a sight. Then he mocks himself, chuckling "It have been too long ago, drow, you are becoming too sensitive to female beauty...." (Silver:) You will notice that around the others player characters she has taken to leaving her hood down much more than before, and beneath her cloak you can see a simple yet attractive silken robe. Her face is attractive, and the robe moves fluidly indicating a very lithe body beneath. She does not join in with the banter that others seem to be enjoying, but does not object to any of it either. (DM:) You figure about three hundred people are gathered here total. Many of the locals are Rangers or other woodsmen types. A druid here and there. (Silver:) Silver will introduce herself to one of the characters who look like druids. She will smile and study the eyes of the druid intently. "My kind fellow, the blessing of Mielikki be on your domain. Is there truly a number of grove-fellows in this land ? Pray tell how you have fared in such a strange and wonderful land. Yours must truly be a story to be heard." (DM:) When Silver talks to a druid, he offers to accompany her for a drink at the party's table. When seated he orders a white wine and explains some things to you rookies. He introduces himself as Tier Breche. When Arlon mentions the Citadel being shut, he says "Well tryin to go fer the Citadel ain't gonna do ye any good now. Tomorrow they'll put posts outside 'n have tables outside where ye can inquire fer possibilities of employment and whatnot." When some of you mention your doubts on the safety of your gear at the commons. "Fear not. I wuz among the first to be here, and I have never yet heard of a single copper gersh bein stolen there. Greedy Thorn may be, but true to his promises he is too." (Tatiana:) "Who'd worry about a missing copper when the old coot's charging a full gold?" Tatiana added sarcastically. (Arlon:) "I wonder if we will get to see or even meet this mage Mendahl Wyvernspur, to form the Pentagon from the rock is even above my skill." (DM:) When Arlon voices his awe over Mendahl Wyvernspur and his desire to meet him, Tier Breche turns around in his chair scoping out the customers in the place, and suddenly points. "That there is him. See the tall guy with the dark hair and the shimmering silver tunic? That's him. He is here every day. Very friendly with Adara Jheale, the owner of this place. She used ta be a thief of sorts, who called herself Midnight. Mendahl is a very powerful sorcerer. Sometimes called the Enforcer, as he is the main threat keeping this place from falling into chaos. He was on the wrong side of a power struggle among some Cormyrian nobles, and got basically exiled here." (Arlon:) I will ask Tier Breche if he has ever spoken to Mendahl and if so, is he easy to talk to or standoffish. (DM/Tier Breche:) "Mendahl Wyvernspur? A friendlier fellow is rarely met. He was bitter at being exiled, but decided to make the best of it. He considers all here to be his children, and takes good care of them." (Arlon:) If Tier says he is easy to talk to or has no idea I will wait for a a break in the action and walk to a point near Mendahl and Adara and try to get myself noticed. (Shade:) OOC: I do not know if is possible for a bard to be so interested in magic but I'll follow Arlon in his questioning at the mage. (DM:) Amongst the other villagers and adventurer types present are some professionals (blacksmiths, leather workers, bakers and all those kinds of things that make a village work), and you recognize about eighty percent of those who came with you guys on your ship also present. You wave to some vague acquaintance here and there. There appear to be some nine girls who work as waitresses at this place. They are quite nimble, and weave their way through the crowd as though the place were empty. As soon as you are all seated, one will come up to you and ask for an order. (Kaeyar:) "No thank you, miss, I will not have anything right now." (Dithion:) When the waitress comes for his order, he smiles and says, "I will have a mug of your finest ale!" He laughs, then stops, and says, "Wait! Sorry, could you just bring me a water?" He hands her a silver coin, muttering, "for your trouble." His face turns a bit red. He watches everyone around him with interest. (DM:) Those already waiting for the rest already were sipping at some drink of their fancy. You all take in the view of the sea, with the island inside the bay. A breathtaking view. (If any of you guys were ever in St. Raphael or Frejus or some such place, you will get the picture. Deep blue sea, sun low, glistening off the waves....) (Tatiana:) "To even think about building the Pentagon from magic - well - that is certainly beyond my skill, I'm just a tinkerer. We might want to work out some arrangement for spell trading if we are going to be here too long." (Arlon:) Arlon responds: "Very good Tatiana, I would be willing to share my knowledge of the mystic arts with those of you who have interest in it." (Shade:) An immediate sparkle of interest gleams in Shade's eyes "I do think you'll have very little to learn from us, Arlon, but if you will be so kind to share your lore with us, I'll be glad to do the same." (Tatiana:) "My spell book is back in the Commons. Maybe we can compare spells later tonight and discuss trading?" (Arlon:) "It will probably be a bit late for that and in the morning the mind will be much sharper" - humorous tone - "as long as you don't down too much ale." (Keilan:) At the discussion of various magic: "Such a fickle friend magic is. Able to do whatever you ask until someone else asks it not to. I'm half wary of it, just from what I've heard you say. If I knew more, I'd probably leave it be altogether." (Kaeyar:) Kaeyar shrugs at all this talk of sharing magic. The talk turns back to the high prices required by Thorn at the Commons, and where the party could actually afford to sleep ..... (DM:) Some things that the party has found out during the last few hours .... Rhuleck's Farm is a fortified Kraal about six hours trip inland. It is a cooperative farm, similar to those the Israeli's set up. You get food and shelter for your work and aid in the defense of the place. It is like a big family, but from what you understand, you would be forced to work hard at mundane work. Though gratifying in its own way, it is not the life of a free adventurer. (Falrun:) "As to the discussion of what to do next, I too am in favor of checking out the farm. The Commons is way over priced for my taste and hardly worth a fraction of the cost. Afterwards I think the best course would be to check at the citadel for news of deeds to be accomplished." (Kaeyar:) "Aye, I've heard of arrangements like this, where life is so expensive that just getting by can leave you owing your employer more than you can earn by working for him... "This farm sounds of interest, but I'd remind you all of what the lord of this settlement said -- the laws are strict inside these walls, but outside them, anything goes. In a place like this, there'll be some desperate and ruthless people out there. I'd much rather be out camping or somesuch; but with both local and imported predators, I'd rather get a better idea of the dangers before going that route." (Tatiana:) "Doesn't sound like the place I want to be. And I'm not much into staying in the commons for long. I don't know the first thing about building houses either. I guess I really didn't think this trip through all too well." Tatiana griped. (DM/Tier Breche:) When some of the party mention maybe camping outside the village walls he smiles sadly. "Only the most powerful of adventurers have done that and lived to tell the tale. There are too many dangers out there to stay outside for long without them catching up to you. A few days with luck perhaps. As a place to stay? Nay I would not do it." (Tatiana:) "Looks like we better start thinking of building a home soon. It's that or find the money to commission one to be built for us." (Keilan:) "Hmmm, but then who has that kind of money? In the long run, a house would be much cheaper and better but it'll take time to build so we'd all better get used to sleeping in the wide. For myself, I think I know how to deal with the cold nights..." (big grin) "I could probably construct a simple shelter given a few hours and a few saplings, but it'd just be a hunter's rainbreak, not a proper living space." "On the other hand, if the work around here pays well enough, there is the distinct possibility that Thorn's prices may seem a little better." (Kaeyar:) "Has anyone considered building a house if none are for sale? I've never done such a thing, but it might be worth the attempt what with Thorn's prices. Anyone here know some carpentry?" (Dithion:) Later to the others, "It looks as if we will be based here, so I wouldn't mind getting in on building a house. I can contribute with money and labor, if the rest of you are interested. It might be expensive, though." (Kaeyar:) "Aye, myself as well. Would that I knew some carpentry," he says with a sigh. "But I'm more than willing to donate most of what I have in my pocket now, and move to just sleeping out at the Wide. One good thing that comes of having elven blood is that we're less susceptible to extremes of temperature, and I have no great love of being within stone walls anyway. Aye, I may even move to sleeping at the Wide regardless of what we decide to do in the long run" "In time, I could manage some magical stonework; nothing of the nature that Wyvernspur has managed, but enough to make sections of stone wall. Two problems, though -- I'm not yet skilled enough to use the spell, and if any mage who knew how to dispel the magiks of others knew about it, the wall could be gone at their bidding." (Keilan:) Keilan turns to Tier Breche and asks "I don't suppose you could fill me in on these here woods? What's bad to eat, what's the best place to find game, that sort of thing? I hear these forests are a little wilder than those back home." (Kaeyar:) Kaeyar listens carefully to anything Tier Breche has to say in answer to Keilan's questions about the local wilderness. (DM/Tier Breche:) "You ask me what kind of forest creatures we have here? Well, most are actually quite edible, but they are more ferocious than those back home. One should be warned though, that here the very trees can come alive, plants may attack you, and they are of evil mood, unlike the treants of our own gentle forests. Some small creatures, like the blue lightning, are very stealthy but deadly. It takes a trained eye to spot one slithering up to your campsite in the dark." (Tatiana:) "I bet Surviving in woodlands is the same no matter where you go. It's the living comfortably that's the trick. And I don't think we're going to be comfortable too often." (Shade:) "I do not think we can still take any decision about how and where we will stay in the next days." - Says the drow to the companions - "Let's see at the citadel tomorrow, the way we will decide to get our livings will enforce also where and how we will camp/lodge/ whatever-will-be. Let's have a good time tonight. We have to celebrate the beginning of a new party, tomorrow we shall see what's going to be of ourselves." (Arlon:) "Well said Shade", Arlon raises his small (unique) mug, "A toast then - to us, the Intrepid, may our friendships grow along with our items and wealth, and may fortune follow us as we chart this strange new world." (Shade:) "Fame and fortune to all of us - the drow raises his big cup of fruit juice - and may the silver lady look benignly upon us." (Silver:) Silver responds ... "Indeed Shade, you show a deal of wisdom. I also feel we would all be best going to the Citadel tomorrow, and deciding upon our actions then." (Dithion:) Dithion listens quietly to Tier Breche. When he is done, and there is a place for him to say something, Dithion says, "If you don't mind, I have a couple of questions, Tier Breche. It would seem we will be heading to the citadel tomorrow, but I am curious as to the types of jobs they usually have. Do you have an idea? Or does it just depend? I suppose what I am asking is whether there is more here than guard duty, and hunting the savages." (DM/Tier Breche:) "The Citadel is where ye can get yer payment on accomplished goals. Some standing things though, there are always people needed to guard the daily food-shipments from Rhuleck's Farm. There is also a standing bonus for killed natives that come too close." (Tatiana:) "I wonder what magical abilities the natives have? Shamans maybe? I doubt if there will be any wizardly interests out there." Tatiana said nodding towards the jungle outside the walls of the town. (DM/Tier Breche:) "The natives? Yes they live somewhere. From what a priest gathered from talking to a dead one, we are situated on one of their borders. To the North of here they possess a vast Empire of many cities and villages. There are only one or two small villages in the vicinity here. We have taken to a rough stance here, making them believe we are also only the border of a vast empire, and they should expand in another direction. If it works we shall see." This last said with a dubious look. Tier Breche then bids the party goodnight and leaves ... (Silver:) "If we find some way of obtaining suitable accommodation after we visit the Citadel tomorrow, then we should go for it. Otherwise, I wish, like Kaeyar, to sleep in the Wide." (Falrun:) Falrun offers his opinion that we should stay at the Commons until better accommodations can be arranged. In the morning we should look for work at the citadel and find out just what kind of work is needed and what kind of pay is offered. Talk turns back to skill with daggers and swords ..... (Falrun:) "Tatiana, Kaeyar, Keilan, and Shade, with all this talk of competition going on, I hope there is room for me to join in the festivities. I may not be able to beat any one of you but I certainly would enjoy the opportunity to try. You name the game and I'll play." (Tatiana:) "Why Falrun, of course you're invited to participate. Why don't we start with dagger throwing. I'll wager a golden crown I hit more bullseyes in the same amount of time against anyone. With that she lifted a fold of her sweat-soaked formerly fluffy blouse to reveal a brace of 6 daggers. (Shade:) "Bet accepted" - the drow looks dubious at his companions - "I do think I'm going to lose money tonight, but sometimes you have to pay for your fun." (Kaeyar:) At the talk of knife-throwing, Kaeyar would draw a dagger from the half-dozen on his belt, flip and toss it a bit, resheath it, smile and nod. Kaeyar gladly tosses a coin into the ante. (Keilan:) At the mention of the wager: "Ah, no. Count me out. I'd be happy to throw for fun. But you evidently are richer or more confident than I. Perhaps once you've come to a conclusion of who the victor is I shall try my hand at it, but not at your prices. Even Thorn does not ask so much for so little." (Tatiana:) Tatiana grinned, "A full two time spans to throw as many daggers as you can. But only the ones that hit the target count. We'll throw from the longest range to make it more interesting." Tatiana went about setting up a little target range for the group to have their challenge. (Falrun:) Falrun replies to Tatiana, "The dagger is not a weapon that I have used often, but I am willing to accept your challenge. Then maybe later we can match swords, better yet, let the winner name the next game." (Tatiana:) "Nay good sir, the loser should have that opportunity to keep things fair" Tatiana said as she set a wooden plank in the ground and places two marks on it with her dagger. "Between these two marks on this board is the target" She then started to pace off 30 yards. (Arlon:) About the dagger throwing, Arlon would enjoy watching his new companion's skill. (Tatiana:) Tatiana walked back from the makeshift target, and drew a line in the sand at the longest range a dagger could be thrown reliably. She took a few deep breaths and focused on the target. "Two time spans, someone give me a count" she said without taking her eyes off the target. Someone spoke up "Begin! 1..." Then a blur of action as she reached to her belt where her brace of daggers were, and one after another all 6 daggers went flying towards the target. ...2. Stop!" She looked out at the target with satisfaction. It was peppered. "You're up Falrun." (Falrun:) Falrun steps up to the mark and remarks to Tatiana, "Your throw is mighty impressive. Mayhaps I have bitten off more than I can chew. Before taking my turn I'll need to borrow your daggers. By your leave, milady?" Taking the daggers, Falrun calls for a count. Not being so skilled he is only able to throw four daggers and only two actually hit the target. He looks puzzled at the two remaining daggers as if he's not quite sure why he's still holding them. After a moment he just shrugs and walks to the target. After picking up the erring daggers and cleaning them on his breaches, he hands them back to Tatiana saying, "You have truly bested me, dear lady. Maybe next time you will not be so successful. If nobody does worse than that poor performance it will be my choosing for the next contest. There is one more question that I have, What do you do in a pitched battle after you've thrown your sixth dagger?" Falrun says with a slightly amused chuckle. (Tatiana:) She looks a bit confused at this comment. "If they're still standing I consider running. Then again if I have trusted comrades at my side I use this" she says as she pats her plain longsword at her side. "And I'm quite good with it too" she added with a smile as if in challenge. (Kaeyar:) Kaeyar's jaw drops as he watches Tatiana's knife-throwing performance, one of the few times anyone has seen him without a scowl or a smirk on his face. OOC: Kaeyar's player is kinda confused by this too. I started looking through the player's handbook to see how many daggers I could personally throw per round; table 45 tells me 2 per round, but the section "Rate of Fire" in the Combat chapter says 3 per round. Of course, I have the first printing of the 2nd edition, which has some errata. OOC: I'll assume I can just get off 2 per round; also I assumed when rolling that I was throwing at AC 10 from long range. I'm *not* a rules weeny, really, I just want to be fair here!) (Tatiana:) OOC: I'll tell you how I did it. Table 45 is correct in 2 per melee round The description of rate of Fire is in error. It should read 2 daggers per melee round or 3 darts. Tatiana used to be a warrior before becoming a Bard. She took advantage of specialization for a couple of weapons. Daggers was one of them. So table 35 says 3 per round for a fighter between the levels of 1-6. so you know I'm somewhere in that range. I'm working on the fact that you can only have one specialization at first level and could take a second in a weapon you already know at 3rd and you can't save unallocated slots. I'm not a rule lawyer I just play one :) (Kaeyar:) Kaeyar's first shot hits dead-center, with the blade burying far into the target; letting out a self-satisfied "heh," he launches the next blade. But this one hits the target pommel-first and clatters to the ground. His confidence shaken a bit, the next two daggers are on the mark but did not sink very deeply into the target. Grumbling, he flips a coin to Tatiana, and quietly retrieves his daggers. He then sits quietly, trying not to look like he's sulking. (Tatiana:) "Don't feel bad. I'll buy a round for good sportsmanship. Honestly, I just wanted to prove to you I'm good with blades. That way you could trust me when things get hot. I'm as good with a long sword too. I just don't have the strength of you men to back it up." (Falrun:) "I suppose it's Shade's turn now?" (DM:) The sun is low, and as you sit at the Tavern you all discuss the landing and the events of the day so far. You are surprised at the good quality of the food and drinks of the place. (Kaeyar:) After having eaten a hearty meal (with some of whatever drink is the cheapest -- "ah, a uniquely revolting drink - care for some, Tatiana?"), (Tatiana:) "Why is it that when something tastes awful. You always give it to someone and say 'here taste this! it's gross'?" (Kaeyar:) "Why, Tatiana, without pain one would have nothing to measure pleasure against!" Kaeyar takes a big swig, grimaces, and laughs. Meanwhile, outside the Tavern, an owl flies .... (Tatiana:) Tuft had finished hunting and grooming himself afterwards and winged his way back to Tatiana. He had left the zone which let him feel truly connected to her, but that was the price for good hunting. He had seen many strange and interesting things in this new world and couldn't wait to get back to tell Tatiana about it all. He circled close to the building with lots of noise coming from it. He knew Tatiana was inside by the empathic connection the two had with each other when they were close. He silently landed on the roof top and waited for her to leave later. He was quiet all evening and listened to the sounds of a new world. Later on that evening, as the party relax after a good meal .... (Tatiana:) Tatiana pulled out her lute out of the case and placed the case open on the table nearby. She then started to strum a tune. "What do you want to sing, Shade?" (Shade:) The bard takes his strange instrument out of the case, then he smiles at Tatiana "Go on on any song you like, I'd like to weave on your music just to start. Later on I can sing you a fictitious ballad I composed some time ago: it's called 'Heroes of the Chamber'." OOC: You won't believe this but I got caught in my own ambiguity: I really wrote the beginning of a ballad called Heroes of the Chamber about an adventure in Greyhawk: the chamber was the top council of an evil race of psionic beings. With a wide grin, he says "Sometime I've better be more attentive at what I say. Anyway, let's take it as a not so mildly coarse pun." (Tatiana:) Tatiana laughed appreciatingly at Shade's humour. "What kind of instrument is that? I don't think I've ever seen anything like it before." Tatiana started a frolicking tune that caught peoples attention and started their toes a tappin'. Title "A whale of a tale" (Shade:) The drow listen to the song for less than half a minute, then begins inserting a second line of melody tightly interlocked with Tatiana's. The melody is played by two instruments: Shade's baritone voice and his balalaika-like guitar that sounds... well, you have never ever listened to anything similar. OOC: It sounds just like a fender Strat with or without overdrive and wha-wha. after a beginning with notes liquid, long and a little eerie, it takes rhythm and tempo to become a much more tavern-song like. (Tatiana:) "Weeell, It's a whale of a tale. I'll tell ya lad. "It's a whale of a tale or two-oo......" ... "Well, Blow me down and pick me up. She was the Captains wife ..." (Kaeyar:) After the "Whale of a Tale" song, and the conversations/actions above are resolved, he'd quietly leave without a word; if you weren't watching Kaeyar, it might be a few moments before you notice he's gone. (Falrun:) When the song reaches the end to general applause, Falrun leans over and asks Tatiana if she would care to dance. "It has been many moons since I've had a good dance, would you care to join me Tatiana?" (Tatiana:) Tatiana genuinely blushed and hesitantly answered "I'd love to, but I don't know how. I'm usually doing the singing and entertaining. Not being entertained." She stopped and waited expectantly to see if Falrun would rescind his offer and accept her excuse. (Shade:) A wicked smile appears on the bard's face. He turns to wink at the companions but not to be seen by Tatiana and Falrun "I can play for you Tatiana, I know some dance music that I think you'd like" (Tatiana:) Tatiana was too nervous to notice the smile on Shade's face, but worry about embarrassing herself was very evident on her face. (Falrun:) Falrun accepts the response from Tatiana and turns to Silver, "Maybe you would care to join me in a dance, especially to such lovely music that our bards are able to produce." (Tatiana:) Tatiana smiled ever so slightly in apology. Only the most observant would discern she was disappointed. (Silver:) Silver responds to Falrun by touching his cheek gently with her hand. "You have a very kind nature, Falrun, and I thank you for the offer. However I dance to different music than this". Silver's eyes mist over for a moment, and then return to look at Falrun once more. "I am sorry Falrun, but I must decline your offer. Let us talk more tomorrow, perhaps" (Tatiana:) She then leaned over to Whisper in Silvers ear. [Only sent to Silver: "I'm so embarrassed. I don't know how to behave like a real lady like you. I only know how to behave like one of the guys exchanging banter back and forth. But that's from hanging out in Taverns like this one. I've never been with a man and don't know how to handle all of this attention from real gentlemen."] (Arlon:) Well, being that Arlon is a very observant elf plus the fact his eyes would continue to fix on Tatiana and Silver (mainly Tatiana from what it looks like she is wearing) as he scans the room. Arlon will stroll over to Tatiana and say: "M'lady, I am a poor substitute for Falrun; but if you wish to dance I can oblige you" Then whispering to her "Plus you could always cut in with Falrun when we get close to him." (Tatiana:) "But I don't know how. I'll make a fool of both of us." As everyone looked skeptically at her. "Really I've never danced in all my life I wouldn't know what to do with my feet." She then looked questioningly at Arlon and chewed on the side of her bottom lip. OOC: I'm trying for apprehension here. Sorta like when you were a teenager and were afraid to ask your first girl out on a date. Real hesitant. (Arlon:) Arlon replies (trying to use a encouraging tone): "A fool, NEVER - you will be like a swan on a lake" Then bowing down to her, offering his hand, he whispers "Just follow my lead, I'll coach you and we can start slow." (Keilan:) Keilan joins in the conversation, calling out "I take then that you haven't seen a swan land on a lake. Ungainly creatures. And not very tasty either." (Tatiana:) Tatiana's eyes widen with dread as Keilan talks of ungainly creatures. She looks to Arlon with a pleading look, but he was saying something back to Keilan. (Arlon to Keilan:) Arlon is using a voice different than his plain talk - it fluctuates in pitch and intensity and you may hear a little chuckle in it also: "My dear Keilan, I have seen many such things and more, many more things than even a man of your talents could have; but I did not say anything about the swan landing - I said 'on' which means the swan was already there. After dancing with Tatiana I can instruct you on verb tenses" using a more serious voice "but the most important thing is, Tatiana is far from ungainly." (Tatiana:) Tatiana's look of dread lessened significantly at the compliment from Arlon. The small smile on her face masking her nervousness was for Arlon alone. (Keilan to Arlon:) "Then I think your age must be clouding your mind, for though she may yet be a swan on the lake, she is now just approaching it on the wing. Don't condescend to think you have to teach me of language until you take a grasp on reality. I was once an inexperienced dancer at the hands of my sisters. I know all too well the foolishness of the first dance. And the second...and the third... But off with you two! Dance until you can stand no more. I will sit and make my own judgment of her skill." and now in low, accented elvish: "You have no idea what I have seen, long-lived one." (Arlon:) I am assuming that the tone of this is a little harsher than a jest - has a little bit of sting to it. Arlon will still be in his humour tone; but he will watch for any tenseness (is that a word) in Keilan's face. "Reality? Perhaps your mind is clouded by ale; of course my mind may be clouded, but it is not by age my friend - it would be by beauty!" **then a more serious tone here** "You speak of foolishness - is it foolish then to increase in your talent, is it foolish to learn a new skill, was it foolishness that we learned to walk?! The first, second, third and following tries are necessary for these. Nay, the only foolishness is not to do, for then you remain an infant stuck on your back and your life nothing more than waiting for death." (Keilan:) Keilan seems a little less lighthearted after speaking with Arlon and shifts about uncomfortably in his seat. While the dancing continues, he calls to a serving girl, and demands a cup of ale (his first tonight). After receiving his drink, he takes a long pull at it and closes his eyes. He sits back in his chair and remains there, eyes closed, unless someone disturbs him. (Tatiana:) "Gentleman please. I only consented to dance if it was going to be fun. And if you keep up this line of folly then I think my mood may change." She then gives Arlon's arm a tug and Keilan a scolding look that said 'Don't make this any worse than it already is!'. Both men smiled their apologies and Arlon escorted Tatiana to the dance floor where the incident was soon forgotten. (Tatiana:) Before Tatiana takes Arlon's arm ready to dance, she hesitates and says "One moment," as she unhooked the belt that held her plain longsword and brace of six daggers. She then laid her lute aside and other instruments. "Shade, I trust you'll keep an eye out for my things? Play something easy please" (Shade:) The drow smiles warmly "I'll surely oblige 'Ana" - he winks - "Good luck on your first dance lesson." (Tatiana:) She then took Arlon's hand and let him lead her out to a clearing where the could dance. She looked to Arlon questioningly with puppy dog eyes. "What do I do now?" she asked as she waited for Shade to start his music. (Arlon:) Well without going into too much detail I will tell/show her the basics like a box step, telling which foot and when - oh the position is the old hand on hip, hand in hand , hand on shoulder thing (don't know if everyone un-roleplay-wise knows this) - try to maintain the same distance between each other - so if I go forward she goes back and vice versa. I will give her verbal as well as pressure cues (with the hands). Once she gets the hang of it I'll add a little more motion to the dance. Arlon will also say things out loud such as: "You dance very well, even with my rigid stepping" "The trees cannot match your swaying splendor" "Dagger tosses? I think we need a dance contest, we are assured of victory" ... OOC: This is funny I am a terrible dancer; but I have seen enough to understand it. Anyone see Dirty Dancing. (Tatiana:) At the start of the dance she grew very serious and listened intently to Arlon as he explained how the moves went. She concentrated hard to get them right. Despite her grace she was quite mechanical in her dancing at first. (Shade:) The bard thinks for a moment, then he starts playing a simple, valzer-like tune adjusting the tempo if the dancing couple hesitates. (Tatiana:) Tatiana could tell Shade was playing an easy song for her and adjusting his speed and tempo to cover her faults. He was masterful in covering her mishaps. Throughout the dance, Tatiana looked back to Silver to see if she was doing okay, and Silver would nod indicating she was doing fine. By the end of the dance she was actually smiling again thanks to Arlon's gentlemanly behavior. (Arlon:) During dancing, if Tatiana wants I will move us in closer to Falrun for a cut in. (Tatiana:) "I'm having too much fun here with you. I'd rather keep dancing some more if you don't mind." she said with a smile and a bat of the eye. She gave a small squeeze of affection for good measure. Finally the bottom of Tatiana's feet started to hurt and she asked to stop. Arlon was too polite to say if his hurt too (the tops that is :-) She leaned in to kiss Arlon on the cheek, and it lingered a little longer than necessary. "Thank you very much, I enjoyed myself!" she said with enthusiasm. (Arlon:) A broad smile would be seen on Arlon's face (and maybe slight blushing that would be difficult to notice in the dimmer light). He then made a couple quick gestures and spoke a word or two - to those who would be watching, Arlon would have appeared taller than usual, perhaps even a foot. (Tatiana:) When they arrived at the table, she leaned across the table and kissed Shade on the cheek too. "Thank you for taking it easy on me out there. You're a masterful player." (Arlon:) After escorting Tatiana back to the table Arlon says: "I don't remember dancing being so invigorating, I am feeling a foot taller at the moment" To the other males Arlon makes eye contact with - he will definitely have a proud and haughty look, a sort of I'm a king at the moment look. This look will probably be intensified if he looks at Falrun; but if Falrun seems upset at this, Arlon will lose his look and make an apologetic gesture. (Shade:) The drow will look at Arlon with a definitely amused expression, then, he will dramatically kneel in front of the elf saying "His majesty, will he be so kind as to honour us with your presence?" A wink and a smile that, being mocking is still veeery friendly he will gesture indicating the table. (Arlon:) "Yes Shade, I do feel like a king and I also believe I am at a loss for words." A silly grin appears on his face. (Silver:) Silver then wanders over to whisper something to 'Ana, and then bids the rest of you have a "wonderful time celebrating our arrival", and wanders off upstairs, humming a tune softly to herself. [This piece sent to Whisper and Tatiana only : I hope to be hunting with Tuft tonight. He really is a special creature. If you need an excuse to get out of any embarrassing situations you may have talked your way into, then listen to what I am saying now, laugh heartily, and make some excuse to take your leave. I don't suggest you actually do this, but just in case you need an excuse ...] (Silver:) Silver then goes upstairs. Anyone looking for her later may find she is not in her cot, nor anywhere to be found in the Common's rooms. Shade and Arlon walk over to talk to Mendahl. (Arlon:) Intending to speak to Mendahl, Arlon plans to say something like: "Greetings master, I am Arlon, I am new here and I have heard of your power in the raising of the Citadel; perchance is it you that teaches the mages in the mystic arts?" (DM/Mendahl:) When you two approach Mendahl Wyvernspur, he looks at you inquiringly. When you greet him he speaks: "Ah. Fellow followers of the arts. You honour me too much, but yes, I am the head of the Mage-Guild-to-be for this place. I would be glad to teach you some of my things, though I would naturally ask for things in return. I have a great interest in new species, thus any new species you find, bring me a specimen, and I will teach you something. Is this a deal?" (Arlon:) "Oh, yes! That sounds good to start." (Shade:) The drow slightly bows "Of course Master Wyvernspur, this is a deal." (Arlon:) Starts asking questions: "Are there many of us here (mages)? Are there creatures that are resistant to magic? Do the natives have magic, and is there to be magic found here? With what spells did you create the Pentagon?" (DM/Mendahl:) "Ah, the zest of youth (Mendahl has silver-gray hair). Unfortunately our number is small here, and few have fought outside the walls yet. Thus as to the resistance to spells of the native wildlife I can tell you little, however the native humanoids are as susceptible as you are." This with a conspiratorial grin. "Ah. How my Pentagon was raised. Nay, tell you how I cannot. The skill to use the spell you have not yet I am certain and it is a very special one. I could hardly give away the secrets of my home to a complete stranger!" This also said with a grin, and obviously joking. (Shade:) "As resistant as him? (Arlon) No joke? So little responsive to beguiling are the natives?" - puzzled at the least - "How can they be? Will you be so kind as to explain us?" (DM:) Some of you dance and sing till they drop :). Some take to other activities. However before you all decide to go to bed, an owl suddenly lands amongst you and transforms into Silver, she seems distraught, and brings you dire news....
